Several Verizon subscribers are claiming that Big Red is imposing a speed cap of 10Mbps on video streaming services Netflix and YouTube. To prove that this is indeed happening with Netflix, we copied a test that was published elsewhere on Friday morning. With our Moto Z Force connected to Verizon’s network, we ran Ookla’s Speedtest app and scored a download speed of 48.22 Mbps on Big Red’s 4G LTE network.
The next thing we did was run Fast.com. This is actually an app available from the Google Play Store that is offered by Netflix. The app measures download speeds for Netflix only, so in this case it’s limited capabilities are just what we wanted. And sure enough, during the test the speed was never much above or below 10Mbps; in fact, at the the end of the test we obtained a data speed of exactly 10Mbps on the nose.
Netflix released a statement this morning which states that the streaming video provider does not cap its mobile data speeds on any mobile network. We are going to see if we can get an explanation from Verizon. Keep checking in as we will be updating this story if anything new develops.
UPDATE: Verizon responded to our request for a response by releasing the following statement: “We’ve been doing network testing over the past few days to optimize the performance of video applications on our network. The testing should be completed shortly. The customer video experience was not affected.”-Verizon Wireless
