Industrial Applications of DIN Rail power supplies

12

A DIN Rail power supply is the central unit for power distribution. It takes the AC voltage from the line and converts it into DC voltage. The DIN Rail power supply unit is located in an electrical cabinet mounted on a DIN rail. The DIN rails are long metal strips making up the centrepiece of standard equipment rail mounting system. A 24v dc power supply provides dependable DC power for a variety of applications.

DIN stands for Deutsche Institut für Normung or the German Institute of Standards. The rack mounting system was devised by the Germans in the late 1920s, became popular across Europe and the rest of the world by 1950. DIN rail has standard dimensions that have been adopted as European (EN) and international (IEC) standards.

Types of DIN Rail power supplies

Control panels and electrical cabinets use DIN-Rail power supplies to meet industry standards such as 12v, 24v, or 48v dc. Its application is also varied – it can be used in motors, valves, solenoids, or non-linear loads where the start-up currents can be very high. They have to be certified to UL standard 508 safety and performance standards for factory automation as well as the UL60950 general purpose power supply standard.

The DIN rail comes in 3 different categories

  • Top Hat Section, Type Ω or Type O having cross-section that is in the shape of a hat – it is 35 mm wide and is used for mounting relays, motor controllers, circuit breakers, and programmable logic controllers among others.
  • C section – they come in various heights and are named C50, C40, C30, and C20. The numbers indicate the net vertical height of the rail.
  • G section – this rail is used to hold high power and heavier components. Usually mounted with the deeper side at the base, the hardware is snared over the lip and turned until it clips into the shallower side.

Factors to consider while choosing a DIN Rail Power Supply

To find the perfect DIN rail power supply for your business needs, you must consider the following factors:

  • Input/output – it is recommended to go for a wide AC input voltage range
  • Connection and wiring – wires should have shorted cable length and largest cross-section possible
  • Maintenance cost and reliability – always do the cost-benefit analysis – don’t go for a cheaper product by sacrificing reliability.

24v dc Power supply

Although industrial applications have used different voltages (from 440v ac to 110v ac) over the years, 24v dc is preferred now. This is due to safety concerns and growing demand for this voltage by programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Furthermore, European industrial companies migrated to 24v, and now the majority of industrial control applications across the world prefer 24v. The same trend is followed all over the world.

Advantages of 24v dc Power supply

  • globally accepted standard
  • useful in a wide range of components
  • easily mountable on a standard 35mm rail
  • facilitates fast and safe deployment of a complex system

DIN rail modules are increasingly being used for smart home applications, security technology, and building automation. As most of the industrial users prefer the 24v dc power supply over other models, it is important to ensure that you get the right product at the right price.
