Go Behind-the-Scenes of Archangel: Hellfire and see the Mech Combat Game Come to Life

Almost a year after Archangel launched for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive developer Skydance Interactive released a free update for the virtual reality (VR) title, Archangel: Hellfire. Rolled out earlier this month the update gave fans what they were looking for, moving away from the on-rails action of the single-player campaign and into free-roaming multiplayer combat. Today,  Skydance Interactive in conjunction with Oculus are giving fans an inside look at how they brought the massive mech warriors to life in a brand new mini documentary.

The video goes into detail about how to develop the videogames vision for massive mech warrior combat, the studio used VR modelling software Oculus Medium, thus allowing the team to quickly prototype and view models to scale in VR.

Whilst developing the update Skydance Interactive found that it took around six months to design the cockpits in a traditional 2D manner using Photoshop. Then Concept Artist Bryant ‘Momo’ Koshu started to play around with Oculus Medium, modelling the mechs directly in VR for the first time. “With the current new cockpit that I have designed it literally took me over a week,” states Momo

After freely sculpting in Oculus Medium Momo then added the final touches using ZBrush, Autodesk 3ds Max, Unreal Engine 4, Photoshop and other tools.

“If you’re working on a VR game and you want to see something in VR, why not design something already in VR,” Momo adds.

Archangel: Hellfire’s free-roaming multiplayer allows for either PvP or 2vs2 combat across a war torn cityscape, snowy mountain terrain and other open combat environments. There are six different massive mechs to choose from, each designed to suit different play styles, whether that’s nimble and swift, or slow and seriously armoured up. In addition to the mech varieties there’s a selection of 13+ powerful, weapons and special abilities to choose from.
