iPhone XR took the top spot in the global 2019 phone sales, according to market researchers. And these analysts highlight that the 6.1-inch iPhone 11, a model only available in the final four months of 2019, also outsold every other handset.

Apple made six of the top 10 best-selling phones in 2019.

The iPhone XR, which launched back in 2018, captured 3.0% of sales last year, according to Counterpoint Research. And capturing 2.1% of sales was a enough to put the 6.1-inch iPhone 11 in second place.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 and A10 were the next most popular handsets, according to Counterpoint. Coming in at fifth place, the Chinese-made Oppo A5 was only only entry not from Apple or Samsung.

Next there was the iPhone 8 with 1.2% of global sales, just ahead of Samsung’s Galaxy A20. Rounding out the top 10 best-selling phones in 2019 were the iPhone 11 Pro Max (1.1%), iPhone 7 (1.1%) and iPhone XS Max (1.0%).

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series didn’t make an appearance on Counterpoint’s list.

“Apple captured all the top five places in North America,” notes Counterpoint. But many of the top-selling models in Europe were from Samsung.

Apple didn’t break into the top 5 in China, Middle East and Africa, or Latin America, showing the company still has plenty of room for improvement.

Apple doesn’t make the top 5 lists in many developing regions.
